May 2, 2016 8:49 AM in response to Esquaredby Mavis Ellen,Thank you for trying to help me. I am feeling pretty desperate at the moment.
I think it was June 2012. The model No is A1311. The serial No. is C0*******HJN EMC No 2428
It has been regularly upgraded and now/was the latest El Capitan.
A few weeks ago the information was that the 999.45 GB's was full and then it crashed.
I started again from recovery mode and erased the start up disk and reinstalled the system.
There was 833.35 GB's of space available and in recovery mode now it does not give me the option to erase just states that the disks are locked but no spaces are present to insert my password. I have never used filevault or a firmware password.

May 2, 2016 8:45 AM in response to Mavis Ellenby Esquared,Since you already erased that disk, I presume you have a recent backup of your files? There is a chance that the hard disk has to be replaced.

May 2, 2016 8:54 AM in response to Esquaredby Mavis Ellen,I didn't have a full back up but my music, my own I am a songwriter etc., was all on a separate hard drive and all my photos are in icloud.
I have an iPad and iPhone still functioning but I need access to garageband.
Thanks for your help. I will have to ring an Apple store tomorrow for advice. It is a bank holiday here in the UK today.
