usb ports not being recognised

Suddenly the usb ports that I use for memory sticks and card readers are not being recognized by newly installed 10.11.4 unless I reboot, and recognition becomes part of the restart. Only variable is that Time Machine disk got filled, I turned off Time Machine until I get new auxiliary drive. My MacPro is five years old, ample memory etc. Suggestions?
