Essentially reformatting in Disk Utility>Erase will wipe the HDD.

You can reformat (erase) the drive to factory settings using About OS X Recovery if the Mac is running v10.7 Lion or later. It's all done online via a Wi-Fi network.
I've followed the directions to erase my hard drive but Format, Name, Security Options and Erase are all grey, inactive. I need to get this done on my MacMini too and it has the same problem. The MacBook is 2009, with Yosemite, the MacMini is much earlier, Mountain Lion.
