Right Click not working on new USB Apple Mouse on MacBook Air.

I just bought a new wired Apple Mouse for use with my MacBook Air. The left click works fine. So does the scroll. Unfortunately, they appear to be the only functions that are working. The mouse will not right click unless I press "Control" + click. I have gone into System Preferences and set the right side of the mouse to "Secondary Click", but it's not working. Clicking on the right side engages a "Primary Button" click. Additionally, the side buttons aren't doing anything even though they're set to one of the other actions. Please help. Thanks.
