The clicking heard from failing Hard drive comes from an internal recalibrate. After trying for 100 times to re-read a bad block and get good data out of the error-corrector, the drive does a recalibrate (seek track 00) where there is traditionally a switch that confirms the location as track 00. Then it does a seek back you to the troublesome track and tries to read again. The single out and back of a recalibrate produces an audible click on many drives -- but it comes from inside the drive, it does not get sent out on any interface.
