iPhone 6 plus messages app slow or unresponsive

iPhone 6 Plus, 64 GB, iOS 9.3.1, tons of free space, 4 GB used for message app. The messages app will go unresponsive for 3-5 seconds at random times. Sometimes it is fine and sometimes it is really bad. This happens with no other apps running, after a full reboot, etc. No extra keyboards, just English and Emoji.I REALLY do not want to do a restore as there are TONS of mission critical messages on the device.

Any ideas?
