I have a late 2008 Macbook Pro. I have two memory slots with 2Gb in each slot, total of 4Gbs. I am using El Capitan OS X, 2.4GHz, Intel Core 2 Duo. Mac support told me technically he could not tell me how to upgrade so I am asking the community if it can be done on this older model.

You will need to disassemble the MacBookPro to get to the RAM though.
It is possible to upgrade the RAM but it is dependant on the model of the device. Have a look at the link below. This has a scanner which can determine the highest amount of RAM you can have on your Macbook Pro.

There are three 2008 MacBook Pros, an early 2008 and late2008 relisted, (both Macbookpro4.1) and late 2008 (Macbokpro5.1).
The 4.1 can handle 6 GB while the 5.1 can handle 8 GB. Only get memory from a place that guarantees it will work with your model Mac. Places are Crucial and OWC/MacSales
