Music plays, but no sound

My brand new iPod will play music for a few songs, then the sound will stop. According to the screen, the playback is still going on, but silently. This has happened multiple times - in fact I took the iPod back and exchanged it for a different one because I assumed it was a fault of some sort. Is there a setting that needs to be changed, or what in the heck is going on? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm using a docking station. Originally I thought it was a bad docking station, so replaced it with a new one. Then swapped out one new ipod for another, still having the same problem. It seems to be completely random when it happens - sometimes mid-song. Music on the computer plays fine. The previous (really old) ipod played music just fine.

The only way I can get it to play again is to cycle through the functions on the docking station, then power up the ipod again. I've tried removing the ipod and replacing it for a fresh start -- doesn't work.

Turned off the blue tooth in case the cube environment I was in was causing some interference that way. No change. I've run out of things to try.
