Access time machine files from external drive

I backed up an external hard drive to time machine, but now the external drive has died and won't connect to my computer. How can I go into time machine and access those backed up files? Since the drive doesn't connect (USB), it doesn't show up when I am in time machine.

Mac OSX El Capitan 10.11.4

Thanks,

Tracy

Open Time Machine and go back a few days in time using the interface

Click on the name of your Mac under the DEVICES heading on the left panel

Two drives.....both Macintosh HD (unless you have changed the name) and the external drive will appear

You can navigate to find the files that you want, or choose the entire drive

Right-Click on the name of the external drive and select Restore To

Navigate to the destination where you want to restore files
