Why can't I find Macintosh HD after installing a SSD into the optical drive?

I installed a SSD into the optical drive on my late 2009 iMac a few days ago and it keeps ejecting the Macintosh HD now randomly. I can get it back occasionally by turning my computer off for a while then restarting it. It doesn't show up most of the time when I reboot in different restart modes like Recovery Mode.
