Mac Pro late 2008, new intermittent crashing

I have seen some similar posts, but none that seem to be this same issue.

This Mac Pro has been a workhorse. Over the last couple of weeks, has begun crashing. Mixed symptoms and varies most of the time. Often, the screen will suddenly go black and it will shut itself down. Once it also rebooted itself. Sometimes the image will be broken into fine horizontal lines on reboot, with the apple off to the right, then boot to gray screen only. Have tried multiple things: boot to safe mode, boot to external disc, boot to alternate internal drive, reset PRAM, reset SBC. Then it will run fine for hours or days, then crash again. Ran hardware test - no problems found. RAM shows as available. Yesterday, after days of running well, suddenly the screen image broke up, then went to a vertical blue gray stripe that looked like seersucker. It stayed that way for some time, while I looked online for possible causes, then it changed to a full purple screen. I've included the report from a crash today, hoping someone could find some interpretation. Having trouble getting it to boot well today. Was able to access it remotely for a bit while it had "crashed", then it crashed completely. Have had 3 short flashes in series of monitor LED today and a couple of times, though RAM shows as available. Now, on an attempted restart to safe mode, simply went immediately to a gray screen that switched to black, then gray, then black, then gray, then black - think it was three times. Then LED on monitor began 3 shorts, pause, repeat.

Your kernel panic is caused by inter-processor cooperation problems. The GPU is one of your processors.

With such an entertaining light show as you describe, it sounds like your graphics card is failing. I think it is time for a replacement, and I do not recommend replacing it with another of the same model.

with a Mac Pro 3,1 2008 model, you have a few more options than with older models.
