Can a thunderbolt hard drive be connected to airport extreme?

I recently purchased a G technology 8TB to replace my 1TB hard drive that was connected to airport extreme. Is it possible to use a thunderbolt connection with airport extreme?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Not feasible, since the only ports available for a hard drive on the AirPort Extreme are USB 2.0 and Gigabit Ethernet.
