Different version softwares not compatible?

One thing that is horrible is trying to just watch a movie from your computer onto your Apple TV and having to run downstairs to the computer and turn on the Airplay, and if the Apple TV has a bit older software, or one of the devices do, you have to stop what you're doing and download for hours the latest version. I am really starting to hate my entertainment evenings turning into Apple troubleshooting. I have had Apple products since 1990, but this forced updating of software really *****. As soon as I update to El Capitan, about 3 of my most expensive and most used software will become unusable. Not only that, but I will be forced to buy versions of them that require a monthly subscription forever instead of the one-time price. It all *****.

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2), 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5
