how do you reset an iphone 4s that was given to me and they dont know their apple account

I was given an iPhone 4s from a friend, the iPhone is disabled and to connect to the device I need his email/password and he has forgotten them, is there a way I can reset it completely even if everything on their gets lost?

iPhone 4S, iOS 9.3.1

No, best you give it back to your "friend" and says "No thanks"

There's no way Activation Lock can be bypassed.
