My iPod wont reset, says "There was an error connecting to the Apple ID Server", why is it saying this?

I backed up my new ipod with my sons iTunes account on accident instead of my old backup, now it is under his name and it wont let me reset the ipod even with his password. It keeps saying "There was an error connecting to the Apple ID Server" . Why wont it connect?
