Q: Where do I find El Capitan 10.11? I can only find 10.11.4.

Mac Pro (early 2009) with Yosemite 10.10.5 says I need 10.11 before I can upgrade to El Capitan combo upgrade of 10.11.4. Where do I get just 10.11?

You get the full installer from the Mac App Store. It’ll upgrade the computer directly to 10.11.4; you don’t need to and cannot use the combo updater.

El Capitan is available to download for free from the App Store >  Upgrade to OS X El Capitan

Make sure to backup all your important data prior to upgrading from Yosemite to El Capitan.

Llog into the (Mac) App Store. You can find the full installer (one step installation) in the Featured section. Purchases and Updates sections lead to the incremental installers.

I went to the Mac App Store.  The only file I can download for El Capitan is this one: osxupdcombo10.11.4.dmg. When I attempt the install it shows me this:Upgrade.jpg

No, you did not go to the Mac App Store...

    Try this link: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/os-x-el-capitan/id1018109117?mt=12

You are treating this as a Software Update or a downloaded patch, and not a new "purchase" (it's free) from the Mac App Store.   This is a "purchase" from the Mac App Store.    Not something you can download as a patch.   Go to the Mac App Store — via the menu, use  > App Store — and "purchase" El Capitan there.

This App Store "purchase" will then download a tool called Install OS X El Capitan into your Applications folder.  This is the installer for OS X El Capitan 10.11.  This installer can perform a clean install of OS X El Capitan, and can also perform an upgrade your existing 10.10.5 environment to the current El Capitan version.

Before you perform the El Capitan installation, please ensure that you have a complete backup of your system via Time Machine or other mechanisms; to an external device.   The upgrade does not often fail, but your data is important and that backup might be the only way to recover from a failed upgrade.

Here are the How To Upgrade instructions from Apple.

Well, I tried it that way because Apple keeps indicating it as an upgrade.  I see your point and no one else said that.  I think I see the problem as I was here before, but the Purchase section shows me this and I think that is why I am stuck. It shows as "waiting," and I can't do anything with it.  It has been like that for some time.  My best guess is that it started to download and got interrupted.  Any thoughts?  BTW, I backed up all the files before I got tangled up with this attempt a few days ago. I'm a level 1 because I don't post here. I have had various Macs for 28 years and rarely encounter any problems.  I believe I keep getting sent to the upgrade section (10.11.4) because the App Store is believing I must have already downloaded 10.11.  Thanks for your input!!

try this post - I think your system thinks it has already downloaded the installer and is stuck.  This should unstick it - App Store updates broken

That worked!  I wouldn't work until I rebooted in 'Safe' mode.  Thank you so much!
