How long will battery last using activity app

I'm doing an ultra race at the weekend that will take around 7.5 hours. I've used the strava app on watch to monitor how it's going on long runs but it drained the battery in 5 hours. So I'm wondering if anyone has used the workout app for this length of time and whether it lasted the distance so to speak.

Regards

Alistair

Hi Alistair

A built-in option for preserving battery life on Apple Watch when recording long running and walking workouts via the Workout app is to enable Power Saving Mode.

- On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > Workout - turn on Power Saving Mode.

The mode automatically disables the heart rate sensor when recording workouts for those activity types. Note that calorie burn calculations may be less accurate as a result.

Turning off the phone, or leaving it at home, might be a solution. I have a Polar Beats I use sometimes. I've never checked the battery life with just the Polar Beats chest strap and no phone, but giving that sort of thing a try before the race might work out.

The heart rate monitor on the Watch is fairly decent for running, as long as you're not doing interval training or strength training that involves your hands. For 42 mile (gasp!) run, it should do a pretty good job. Being able to turn off the Bluetooth radio and just use the built-in monitor should save battery life.
