Q: My Macbook Pro running Yosemite has slowed considerably for the past few weeks; I either get the rainbow ball or slow or no response.  I will post an etrecheck report if anyone can help.

Many small glitches as well; sometimes new windows don't open in Safari, and it will lose my wireless printer.  Outlook crashed recently and had to rebuild. Below is the EtreCheck report.  Thanks!!!

The items highlighted in red should be paid close attention to.      Also since you are using Time Machine, I recommend running it manually when you sleep, as opposed to while you work.   You can turn it off through the Apple menu - >System Preferences, add it to the menubar, and select "Backup Now" when you are ready to backup.

I hope you still have the original 10.6 installer disc that shipped with your Mac, or also close your data, or have installed the firmware for Internet Restore, because by default your model does not have internet restore, nor does Time Machine offer a bootable backup.  You'll need that disc to restore your system if you don't, and the drive dies.

See my FAQ* on backing up:

    Thanks.

What do the 2 red items mean (in Launch Daemons and User Launch Agents) and what do I do about them?  Everything seems slow and glitchy and I wonder if it is because of Verizon...  (but of course speed check shows no problem).

I use this computer for work so I need time machine running during the day because sometimes I need to restore; it has always run that way without slowdown, but maybe it is slower because the backup disc is running out of space?  Is there a way to delete the oldest backups from time machine/my passport and would that help?

What is Internet Restore and how would I add that?  I save pretty much everything in either Outlook or Dropbox so I am not too worried about the drive dying (again - it died about a year ago and I had it replaced).

More RAM might help. The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a early 2008 iMac supposedly limited to 4 GB and noticed an improvement.

Time Machine will delete backups as required. Messing with the backup can corrupt the file. There are 2 User login items in the Trash. If you don't need them, empty the try Trash. You can also try uninstalling RIM.

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Internet Restore is built-in to newer computers, and it will download the operating system that shipped with the computer, or the one that last installed, or the newest operating system.   Here's how it works for older Macs:

I emptied the trash and rebooted in safe mode and still very slow.  The RIM uninstall link just links back to this post.  If I go to the genius bar do you think they could help?

The Genius Bar can probably help. They will probably reinstall the OS or possibly erase and reinstall. Copy and paste this into your browser for the RIM uninstall. You can try the reinstall yourself.

Do a backup, preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair Disk and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Then re-install the OS.
