When I've tagged faces in photos and then try to assign to contacts the whole picture with the faces in appears and I then have to edit picture and zoom in on relevant face - can this be made to just zone in on the previously tagged face and or use the key photo previously assigned in the photos app?

Photos or iPhoto? Your signature is saying you are running too old an operating system to use Apple's new Photos App. If you mean you are using iPhoto, there is an iLife forum for questions on that. Otherwise there is a separate Photos forum. Go to Apple menu -> About This Mac if you are indeed running Photos and update your signature. Both forums can be found on the link below, where you will be able to get a more detailed answer for each program:

No. That's not a feature. Tell Apple what missing features you'd like restored or new features added in Photos via https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html.
