it might be, but the sites that host it are known for bundling crap ware with the downloads so I'd kick it to the curb right there.

if you want to detect (not protect) your system from Adware/Malware and more importantly REMOVE IT many of us here have used malwarebytes for Mac (free) and had great success with it and recommend it for it's proven effectiveness, ease of use.

OMG. They want $50 for something that is almost entirely useless.

You don't need any third-party software to scan, optimize, clean, protect, or otherwise "maintain" your Mac. The OS does that for you. Using those products will not make your Mac perform better. It will make it perform worse.

If you find that you have chosen to install adware inadvertently, there are a few tools that can help with that, but you can also remove that stuff manually without any other products.

If you think "chosen to install adware inadvertently" is an odd phrasing, then see here: How to install adware

It's good if you hate your computer. No one should be spending money on any program that claims it will do any of the following:

  • clean
  • boost
  • optimize
  • refresh
  • organize

Macs do a great job of taking care of themselves, and basic maintenance tasks are handed by the OS whenever you shut down. You don't need to install anything, either for free or for pay, to do any of that. I'd class it in the same category of scamware as CleanMyMac and MacKeeper, honestly.

Greetings JimmyCMPIT,

I think there might be confusion with another application, as MacScan does not bundle any software with the downloads. Our company SecureMac has reported on this issue in the past for doing just that (re: http://www.securemac.com/security-advisory/cnets-download-com-adware-installer-b undled-with-popular-apps-advisory ). With that said, we encourage users to download our software or any software directly from the vendors site. I hope I have been able to clear up some confusion. You can learn more about MacScan at www.securemac.com and we can be reached for any questions by emailing ****

Additionally, as a MacScan 2 user since 2010, the upgrade price is $39.99 but probably only until they kill support and service (read as definition updates) for MacScan 2 on 1.Aug.2016. Then the upgrade price will go away then or shortly after. I looked into it and find that my only option is a "1 year" or "2 year" subscription at $39.99 (upgrade) or $63.99 (upgrade), respectively. I HATE SUBSCRIPTION SOFTWARE! (Sorry I yelled.) But the price is already steep just for the upgrade and then what in month 13 after the 1 year subscription upgrade (assuming I buy it) expires? Nothing is found on their website stating this situation other than it stops. What stops? Scanning? Scanning with monthly definition updates? All of this subscription stuff, and the discussions about how well OS X takes care of itself (not to mention the freeware 'malwarebytes') makes me sick to even think about upgrading.

😕
