i have had my mac book from new for nearly 4 years and its started to occasionally not turn on and then not shut down. i have anti virus on it and regularly do scans. its seems to be slower but is there a way a muggle like me can check the health of the mac?
AV software does more harm to a MBP than it does it good. You should eliminate it.

The first step, and maybe the only one needed, is to get rid of your "anti-virus" software. All such software is worse than useless on a Mac, and it may well be causing the problem. Remove it according to the developer's instructions after backing up all data.
To avoid malware, don't download and run unknown software that you don't need, just because you're prompted by something on a web page.
Age itself does not cause the symptoms you describe, but garbage software products claiming to fix them certainly can. "Anti-virus" software is in that category. Remove anything meeting those descriptions according to their respective instructions, then evaluate your Mac's performance.

You seem to have problems with Photos application. Can you provide any details?

the problem with the photos was i was trying to get my photos off my htc phone and the htc sync manager seemed to throw a wobbler and wouldn't let photos but it opens fine when phone isn't plugged in.
the mac seems to be playing ball so hopefully it was just a blip.
