Why is my credit card charged when I have more than enough iTunes credit to pay for my purchase?

Why is my credit card being charged for purchases when I have plenty of iTunes credit? iTunes credit expires after 2 years and what is in my account is getting close to that so tonight I made a purchase through App Store and my credit card was charged, not the iTunes credit deducted from my account.
