the video stops and returns to the selection menu

Whenever I am watching a tv series or movie I downloaded to iTunes, the video stops and returns to the selection menu. The stopping point seems random, sometimes it stops midway through the episode or movie but it has also stopped at some random point in the episode or movie. I am not sure why it is doing this but I would like to know how to fix it.
