Not able to eject flash drive

I inserted a flashdrive and copied three photos on to my desktop. Now I am not able to eject the flash drive. I get an errr message saying the drive is in use and cannot be ejected. What should I do?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)

I don't have an explanation for why the flash drive is in use. Did you open one of the photos using Preview or some other app, which is still open?

If no obvious apps are accessing the flash drive or its files, you can shut down the Mac and disconnect the flash drive.
