It says iPhoto not compatible with El Capitan and now I am unable to access 5 years worth of photos! Please help!

I went to download photos from my phone to my iMac and was told "The version of iPhoto installed on this Mac is not compatible with OS X El Capitan. Download the latest version for free from the Mac App Store." When I do that it says "The item you've requested is not currently available in the U.S. store.". How do I access my photos now? 4+ years worth of family photos are in iPhoto!

iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2011), OS X El Capitan (10.11.4)

Mac OS X 10.10.3 and newer include Photos, which is intended as a replacement for iPhoto and can import its library. If you'd like to go on using iPhoto in addition to or instead of switching to Photos, clickhereand try following the instructions; you'll only be able to do so if you previously got iPhoto from or associated it with the Mac App Store.
