Have had this problem for a while. My laptop stmp server (Gmail) states it is offline. The same mail settings work on two desk top machines, two i-pads and an i-phone. The IT guy that helps out is also stumped. We solved the problem by putting in a different stmp server (his), but he has migrated to a different server and it no longer works. I would like to solve this problem. The laptop is running 10.10.5.
MacBook Pro (13-inch Early 2011), OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)
Apparently there were changes to Gmail requirements past 10.10.3
If you have not tried - delete the account from mail - preferences - account settings
this will not delete your gmail account
Then reboot the computer and add it back again
