Why does Mail open upon opening macbook, and how to stop?

Every time I launch my macbook (whether I power it on, or open out of sleep), my Mail app opens.

This just started happening a week or two ago. I can't seem to figure out how to stop it. I found a similar question from 2013, but the solution is irrelevant with newer Mac updates. (why does my mail application open when i turn the computer on and how do i stop it?)

I've tried digging through the Library, Mail preferences, System preferences - any ideas?

When you shut down or restart the computer, you will see a dialogue page asking if you are sure. There is a box on that page that says "Reopen windows when logging back in". Make sure that is not checked.

And if you are referring to the "Login Items" answer on the linked post, it is still quite relevant.

gail - i forgot to mention, i did try the Login Items thing, but Mail was not in the items listed, let alone one that was checked.

I tried the other thing you suggested (assuring the box to reopen windows was not checked), and it was not.

Thanks for the suggestions, but problem is not yet resolved.

Any other thoughts (anyone)?
