Converting Postscrpt files to PDF

There is a tutortial on the internet that is downloaded in Postscript but
cannot be opened in PDF. The error message is that conversion failed and
file cannot be opened. How do I use the Apple Script to c onvert this
PS file to PDF. I thought that Preview was supposed to do this automatically
and thus allow me to print the file.

Thank you for your help. The web site is www.ndesign-studio.com/resources/tutorials. It's a web site for Adobe Illustrator tutorials. For example, the
file will download as" itune_icon.ai.ps". The error message that I get
from Preview is "PostScript Conversion Error. Couldn't convert the
PostScript file to a PDF file". Followed by "File Error Couldn't open file"

Hi SadieToo

Well, the file downloaded as "itune_icon.ai" for me, and opened perfectly in Preview. Finder's Get Info says it is a PDF file, and Terminal goes further, say it is a "PDF document, version 1.4".

Note I had to control click to get a context menu, and select "Download Link Target", since I have a plug-in that opens PDF documents in my browser. Also I had to go to this page: http://www.ndesign-studio.com/resources/tutorials/itune-icon/ , downloading from the previous page gave me a .html file.

Hi Sadie,

I get exactly the same results as Michael mentions above. No problems opening it in Preview at all.

Your profile claims you are using OS X 10.4.5, is that still correct? Both Michael and I are on 10.4.8 so it could be that there was a bug in Preview that Apple have squashed since 10.4.5.

It's also possible it could also be something in your account that is causing Preview to error. One quick test you can do to help narrow down things is to try the same web site/ps file in another user account. This will help us to know whether your problem is local to your account or system wide. If you don't have another account you can use System Preferences -> Accounts -> [+] to create a test one (and [-] to remove it if needed).

If it fails there too, I'd recommend upgrading to 10.4.8 if possible.

Hi Michael

I followed your instructions to the letter. I have Safari 2.03 and OS 10.4.6
I control clicked the source file and the context menu gave me the option to
download link file which I did. (not Download Link Target") Still Preview could
not convert the PS file to PDF. I tossed out the Preview plist file also but that
didn't help. I might have to upgrade my OS to correct Preview. So thanks
for all your help. This is really strange.

I'm using Camino, which may account for the difference in wording.

Why don't you download it from http://www.caminobrowser.org/. It's free, and it is a fast browser. You can keep it in reserve for this and similar sites. Who knows, you may prefer it to Safari?

Note that I didn't see a Postscript file anywhere. It downloaded to my Desktop, and had the PDF icon immediately.
