FULL HARD DRIVE

My hard drive is almost full. I do not know how to reduce the "other" files. Nor do I know any other solutions. I have read about external hard drives, but I do not know how they work. Please help.

Apple sells a variety of external drives. Make sure it's USB for compatibility with your MacBook Air > http://www.apple.com/shop/mac/mac-accessories/storage?page=1#!&f=extharddrive&fh =3783%2B45ea

You can use the TimeMachine app in your Applications folder for backup and storage > Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac

Click the Apple  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click: About This Mac then select the Storage tab.

Other refers to apps, music., photos, movies, documents, etc. You can move that data to an external drive to free up space on your MacBook Air.

Make sure to restart your Mac after deleting data to see a difference in storage space.

You need at least 10GB's of free space just to run the operating system.
