I have a MacBook Air with 4GB's of RAM. I run multiple apps simultaneously without any problems but I'm not using CAD. It never runs slow no matter how many apps I have open.

4GB's of RAM is recommended.

For design and development it would be easier on the 13" if it fits in your budget.

Congrats on your first Mac!

I would suspect it will do fine albeit probably a bit slow, but for sure I would check the minimum requirements of the IDE or CAD software you intend to use.

More memory is always better, especially true since OS X Maverics due to memory compression rather than disk swapping, but the requirements of the applications will certainly prevail in any decision you make
