I would just like to watch the photos going by without the airplay directions over them. Can I get rid of the box?

The box should not be displayed. Try a reset by disconnecting the power cord for about 30 seconds.

Your ATV has a feature called conference room mode turned on in settings. It is intended for business conference rooms. Turn it off.
