Mid 2009 macbook pro running slow with el capitan

Greetings All

I have a mid 2009 MBP and since installing El Capitan it is running ridiculously slow.

I have done an Etrecheck report and the results are below.

Any help is appreciated:

  1. Uninstall McAfee. There are no viruses currently circulating that can do any damage to OS X, so at this time, anti-virus programs are unnecessary. The majority of them, from what I and other contributors here have seen, negatively affect the performance of whatever system they're installed on. What's more, they don't protect you from what Mac users really need to worry about, which is malware and adware. Malware and adware are installed by you, unlike viruses, which install themselves. The most common way this happens is when you download something via torrent or from an aggregate download site, as many times those installers are bundled with the malware and adware. When you install one, you install all of it.
  2. Uninstall CleanMyMac 3. Macs do not need any program that claims it will boost, clean, optimize, refresh, or organize your computer. Programs like CMM are called scamware for a reason.
  3. Uninstall Trusteer. See #1 for why. If one anti-virus program on a Mac is bad, more than one is even worse.

Anything else I can Do? Ive just uninstalled all of the above.

Any idea what the Launch system agents are?

Launch Agents (as opposed to User Launch Agents) essentially run on behalf of a user and need you to be logged in order for them to run. They appear to be similar to User Login Items in that respect, in that User Login Items launch after you log in (or start up if you don't have your system set to require logging in).

You've not gotten rid of it yet. You can check to see if you've removed all of the files by downloading and running Find Any File to search for any files with the application's name and the developer's name in the file name. For example for CleanMyMac you'd do two searches:

1 - Name contains cleanmymac

2 - Name contains macpaw

Any files that are found can be dragged from the search results window to the Desktop for deletion.

FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages.

Give the above a try, reboot and run another Etrecheck.

You still have CleanMyMac loaded. This is one of the big reasons why installing this program is bad, bad news — it's a bear to get rid of.

May 4, 2016 10:41 AM in response to scrounger73

To complete the removal of "ClanMyMac 3" please follow the instructions below. You may have already accomplished some of those tasks.

That report indicates the last Time Machine backup is quite old. A backup is an essential prerequisite for any action that modifies a Mac's file system.

To remove CleanMyMac 3 itself, use its Uninstaller module, followed by these additional steps:

Remove the file ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.macpaw.CleanMyMac3.Scheduler.plist

  • To navigate to that file, copy and paste the following line into the Finder's Go menu > Go To Folder...

~/Library/LaunchAgents/

  • Locate the following file and drag it to the Trash:
  • com.macpaw.CleanMyMac3.Scheduler.plist

    • Then, open  (Apple menu) > System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items.
    • Select the item CleanMyMac3 Menu
    • Click the [—] (minus) button.
    • Restart your Mac.

Beware that reinstalling OS X alone will have no effect on either removing CleanMyMac or reversing the damage it is capable of inflicting upon a system. To recover from the effects of having used it to modify OS X, the additional software you require and the essential files you need, follow the applicable recovery procedure below:

    • If you have a backup that you created prior to using CleanMyMac, now is the time to use it. For Time Machine, boot OS X Recovery, and at the Mac OS X Utilities screen, choose Restore from Time Machine Backup. Choose a date preceding the installation of CleanMyMac.
    • If you do not have a backup that predates the use of CleanMyMac, create one now. To do that read Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac.
      • The recovery procedure will require that you erase the Mac using OS X Recovery, and then create a new User Account whose contents will be empty. You will then be able to use Setup Assistant to migrate your essential documents including photos, music, work products and other essential files.
      • To erase and install OS X read How to reinstall OS X on your Mac.
        • Follow the instructions in that document under Erase your drive and install OS X.
        • Then, follow the procedure in Move your content to a new Mac.
        • When asked how you want to transfer your information, select Transfer from a Mac, Time Machine backup, or startup disk.
        • Under Select the Information to Transfer, select only your previous User account and do not select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" or "Other files and folders". De-select those choices.
      • Subsequent to using Setup Assistant, you will need to reinstall the essential software you may require, once again remembering to install software only from their original sources, and omitting all non-essential software.
      • "Non-essential software" is a broad category that includes but is not limited to third party "cleaning", "maintenance", and "anti-virus" products.
