Having difficulty upgrading to OS X ElCapitan on an older iMac.

Having difficulty upgrading to OS X ElCapitan on an older iMac. I am migrating from an older MacBook. The older MacBook couldn't upgrade to the latest software but the older iMac had it installed. When I wiped my iMac HD and restored from the last backup of the MacBook is when I found the problem. Do I need a CD to make the upgrade?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.4.7)

How old is the old Mac? What model is it. Go to the Apple menu on your Mac and select the top item and tell us what you see. You will see something like the below.
