Voicemail doesn't indicate when there is a voicemail, and in order to check I have to call my own ph number and get a message to retrieve. It was not always this way. The VM icon does not light up when someone leaves a VM.
Should I reset to factory settings? If so, how would I do that?

Should contact your cell phone provider first.
Looks like your not provision to use visual voicemail.
