Lightening to SD Card Camera Reader

I bought the above card reader for my iPad Air as I'd been using my friends while on holiday.

When I connected it to my iPad an error message appeared "this accessory is not supported by this iPad".

Is the product faulty or not compatible to my iPad Air?
