How do I copy information from a DVD onto my Macbook?

I designed for a Fashion Show at the University I attended and we were all given a DVD of the entire show. I thought it would be cool to include my segment of the show in my online portfolio but I'm scared to try burning it onto my Macbook and erasing everything off of the DVD (if that's possible). I'm not super tech savvy so I just need some help. (Also, if anyone has some tips on how to trim the video once it's on my Macbook, that would be appreciated too!)

You can't erase a DVD.

by using the free HandBrake app.

Using that app you can then convert it to a format you can edit in iMovie.
