images with transparent background automatically saving with white background

For some reason the handling of images on both of my macs with transparent backgrounds is 'odd', I can have an image with a transparent background which if I copy and try to move elsewhere when I paste it has a solid background.

Further if I try to save the image with a transparent background it saves it onto a white background.

I've noticed it for a few months (first when trying to update my photo watermark at the start of the year) first in preview, now trying to copy a graph from excel into keynote it is carrying a white background even though I have everything set to no fill.

Any help gratefully received because this is really frustrating

Ahh yes, sorry about that. I was thinking someone may get closer to a solution by seeing the issue happen on different platforms but still being able to see a connection.

Anyway, as it turns out the soloution may be different for both of us, because I figured out what was causing it for me - simply turning on the option of optimising iPad storage and reducing image quality took away all transparent backgrounds, can’t believe it was so simple. I’ve never really looked to see if this is an option on my Mac tho? But could possibly be a soloution for OP as well.

Didnt mean to clog up the forums, or even ask a question for myself, just thort this info could be relevant to the discussion as a whole.

OP was very patient, but was the issue actually solved? I’ve been having this issue for awhile now myself and have no ideas on how to fix. What’s interesting is that I’m using none of the same software as OP, and I’m using an iPad mini. I’ve have been doing the same thing for years now, downloading free png files through mobile safari then opening them in image editors such as the canva app, or creating text with online editors and saving with transparent backgrounds and never had any issues before. But in the last few months for whatever reason, not every transparent png will save with the transparent background.

I can press and hold on a transparent image in safari, save to camera roll, then press and hold again on same image and save to camera roll again, and one could save with a transparent background while the other one doesnt, it’s completely random. Or it could save with no background but it will only be after editing it in canva for example when it loses its transparency.

This the first time I’ve posted in an Apple forum because you can pretty much find a soloution to any issue you could have after a quick search on the net, but this is now becoming increasing frustrating. ANY help would be very much appreciated, and making the background transparent again isn’t a soloution because it can lose the transparency before I even open the image for the first time.

Thanks

If I just talk about preview to start. Ive tried both png & gif. Both when I click save the grey squared background turns white.

Today i I tried to drop the university logo into keynote. Other people tell me the file has a transparent background and the file is labelled trams but if I open it in preview it opens with a white background or if i drop it in keynote white background as well, this is really obvious as the logo is white do all I see is a white rectangle.

FUrther her today I tried to copy a graph from excel to keynote, the backgrounds are definitely trans in excel as I can see the cells behind but when I paste in keynote again it is on a white background.

Yes I'm using those settings, but if I do manage to get the image in with a transparent background when I open the saved file it is a white background. Opening a file with a transparent background opens it on white, and if I then save it as a png with the alpha selected it saves onto a white background (so I just get a white rectangle if I have a white image).

Further if I paste something which should have no background into preview (such a a few shapes from keynote or my graph from excel) it is now pasting with a white background, if I paste into preview. I can move 'shapes' between keynotes or pages, but if I bring in from any other source to keynote or pages it pastes with a white (again such as my graph from excel).
