My desktop version is 10.6.8 with 4 gigs of ram how do I upgrade the RAM?

It depends on the exact model of iMac that you have.

You can go to crucial.com and download the scanner which give you a complete report of all the alternatives for the RAM on your iMac.

It will also give you all of the part numbers so you can go to other sites such as macsales.com to try to find better prices.
