If your desk top is frozen solid you can try the shortcut keys to open force quit --- actually had it work once and only once.
If you can open force quit - you can relaunch Finder -- this works but only when I had to force quit an application - I than relaunched finder.
If you can right click on finder in the dock - you can trigger a restart --
If you don't have the menu bar - but can open Preview from the dock - the menu bar may appear at which time you can restart
Finder is an OSX problem seems mainly on the INTEL macs
I did already, but it's not working. All my documents on desktop disappear and still loading on screen
You can force a shut down by holding the power button for an extended amount.
Restart as normal.
Go to ~/Library/Preferences, then delete com.apple.finder.plist
How to go to/Library/Preferences as i cannot open the finder?

As an update
Both my MacOSX from OS9 and my Panther booklets that came with the software - say there is a problem with the finder to go to force quit select finder and relaunch it.
Never had an osx desktop freeze on my power mac - but on the intel is has always been a total freeze where you had to shut down completely.
If the startup is not quick I will restart until I am happy and may include a relaunch of the finder.
