When you transfer music to a USB to play in a car etc. doe sit need to be in a certain format to play?

Probably, but what that format is depends on your car, etc. My 2015 Honda will play MP3s and most AAC files. It won't play Apple Lossless, AIFF, or anything with DRM. I also found that the Honda wouldn't accept the USB stick at all if it were formatted HFS+, so I used Disk Utility to give it a FAT format.
