Installation Mavericks: Temporary unavailable

Hi,

my friend gave the MacBook Pro A1278 with Mavericks. But he told me that I must reinstall OS X.

I booted to OS X utilities and erase the disk. Then I tried to install OS X Mavericks, but got an error:

"This item is temporary unavailable. Please try later."

I read, that it can be because of that my account isn't bound to any OS X. And I must go to "get help online", login to iCloud and then I can install OS X.

Unfortunately, it didn't help me.

Then in my Windows PC i burned dmg file to USB-stick, and tried to install from it. But I got an error: Prohibitory symbol

How I can install OS X Mavericks on this MacBook?

Thank you!

Some friend. It was their responsibility to reinstall OS X in preparation for a resale or gifting.

The only legal source for OS X is from the OS X App Store, or Apple servers by booting into Recovery/Internet Recovery. Since you imply that you attempted to burn a dmg to USB on your Windows PC, and it would not boot — that means you didn't get a full OS X installer from Apple, and have illegal software — which is beyond the scope of assistance here with installing bootleg software.

Schedule an appointment with your nearest Apple Store, or Certified Apple Reseller, and see if they can get a legal copy of OS X installed. Mavericks simply may not be an option, and El Capitan will be all you can get.

Why it is illegal? Here you can prepare USB on OS X, I did "same", but on Windows, because I haven't any OS X yet. Is it possible to get legal dmg file from Apple.com? Like Windows: anybody, who has a key, can download Windows, burn to DVD\USB and install it on own PC. An this is full legal and easy.

OK, then why I can't recovery OS X over Internet?

I'll ask nearest Apple Store. Thank you for idea.

An A1278 MBP can be a 13" from 2009 through 2012. As a new owner of a second hand MBP, you must install the original OSX, for legal licensing reasons but also for connecting your MBP top your Apple ID. Without the Apple ID connection, you will never be able top update any applications on your MBP.

If the MBP is an early 2011 model or older, it came with installation disks. You will need them and if that is the case, ask your friend for them. If it is a newer model, you can install the original OSX via Internet recovery:

Because it requires an installation of an OSX to connect an ID to a specific MBP.

On the back of the MBP is the serial number. If you enter it here, you will then find the year of the MBP.

You can try to see if you can install the original OSX via Internet recovery. This assumes that the MBP is a late 2011 model or later. If this fails, then the likely hood is that the MBP is a early 2011 model or older and disks will be necessary.

MacBook (13-inch Aluminum Late 2008)

Repairs and Service Coverage: Expired

Our records indicate that your product is not covered under Apple's Limited warranty or AppleCare Protection Plan for hardware repairs and service based on the estimated expiration date.

Repairs and Service Coverage: Expired - is it a reason why i can't reinstall over Internet?

or initially it is impossible to reinstall on 2008

and one question: on this MacBook can i replace HDD to SSD? is it supported?

Now we have all of the facts. Your Macbook came with Leopard installation disks. You can order duplicates fro Apple customer service if your friend does not have them. You also will need this Snow Leopard retail disk in order to prepare the MBP for a newer OSX:

http://www.apple.com/shop/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard

Then you will have to run the Snow Leopard combo update:

Then the Macbook can have a newer OSX installed.

As a point of information, the Leopard disks can be omitted and you can just install Snow Leopard directly. The disadvantage is that you do not have the Apple Hardware Test nor the applications that go with the OSX.

Ciao.
