Workout App frozen & problems with tracking distance in miles

Workout app has frozen on me during my run twice already and now I can't get it to measure miles. It's measuring in feet. Sometimes it changes on its own back to miles then back to feet again. I did recalibrate and set the distance goal screen to miles but still not working properly.

Tried that. Still not working. I pressed & held both the side button and crown until apple logo came one.

See pictures. To test after force restart , I selected outdoor walk and made sure to select miles in distance goal screen. FYI, I also have miles set in the Health App under Fitness, Walking & Running. Then when I press start it shows feet not miles. I walked like 10 feet and it's not even accurate. It logged 73 feet.

Sorry not sure why the pictures are rotated after I inserted them here. Thanks

Hi

When miles have been selected as the unit of measurement: when viewing distance as the primary metric on the Workout app during a workout, it is normal for distances of less than 0.1 mile to be expressed in feet.

Once you have travelled at least 528 feet, the Workout app automatically switches to stating the distance in miles (528 feet is 0.1 mile).

In respect of the Workout app pausing: during your runs, your watch may have lost contact with your skin, causing it to believe that it had been removed from your wrist. This would cause the Workout app to pause automatically.

A loose fitting band can trigger this by allowing your watch to lift from your wrist and/or by allowing clothing (for example, the end of a sleeve) to slip beneath the back of the watch.

Your photographs suggest that your watch is being worn too loosely.

During exercise, Apple Watch should be worn snugly on the top of your wrist. Apple suggests that you consider tightening your band before workouts and loosening it again afterwards. Better contact with your wrist may also improve heart rate sensor performance during your workout:

Activity estimations depend, in part, on your personal information. To check that this has been entered accurately:

- On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > Health > Edit (upper-right).

It may also help to reset your calibration data and start afresh:

- On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > Privacy > Motion & Fitness > tap on Reset Calibration Data.

Then calibrate your watch again by following the steps in the support article below, including:

  • Record Outdoor Walk and/or Outdoor Run workouts using the Workout app on your watch.
  • Do this for around 20 minutes at each of the speeds at which you normally walk or run.
  • Whilst doing so, take your iPhone with you, with Location Services turned on.
  • Allow your arm to swing naturally during calibration workouts.

Calibration teaches your watch how your arm movements relate to your stride lengths at different speeds, so - when later exercising without also taking your iPhone along - it is important for your arm to swing naturally as you walk or run.

@Jonathan. Thank you for your response. It hasn't been working for me past the .10 miles and I have recalibrated the data etc. However, I will try once again and I will also try your suggestion of wearing the band tighter.

When it has stopped working for me, I have taken off the watch during my workout, wiped it down and wiped my wrist and then I put it back on. It still didn't not work so I restarted the watch and app but again still not registering miles even after walking over a mile.

I'm working out today and will try your suggestions. I'll report back a little later today. Thank you.
