Two of us have MacBooks and iPhones and want to share a photo library on local hardware. We want to get photos off our devices to save memory. Recommendations of how?

How do I put photo libraries from MacBooks and iPhotos into a single library on a local, external device to provide us access and to clear our devices of photos?

An iPhoto Library is a single-user library. if you try to open it from different user accounts, you will run into problems with the file ownership.

For iPhoto Libraries the work-around is to move the library to an external drive, where the flag "Ignore Ownership on this volume" is enabled. The procedure is explained in this document, see the link: iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users - Apple Support
