the bluetooth on my mac works like crap so i bought an external USB dongle
how do i get my mac to use that instead of my internal one?
MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.4), 256GB SSD + 1TB HDD, 8GB ram i5 2.53ghz

Go to Finder > Preferences > General then make sure External Disks is selected. The USB dongle should appear on the desktop.

That won't work.
What's wrong with the Bluetooth on your Mac?
some work right away, some require a Driver.
some will "just work", others you will need to use Preferences or some sort of special program to get them to work.
I have one that calls itself a FitBit Base station. It supports Bluetooth Low energy to talk to a FitBit. I plugged it in and I sued a fitBit web site to download a little program that synced it up and now just uses it.
Others could be MUCH more complicated.
