Question

Missing desktop icon for Seagate 500GB FW external drive

I have recently lost my desktop icon for my Seagate 500GB FW external drive.... it there!!!! System profiler sees it, so does Disk Utilities and even my back up program will still back up to it. However no desktop icon to access it...What did I do or did not do HELP!!!

iMAC G5 Mac OS X (10.4.8) 1G RAM

Go to Preferences under the Finder menu and check to be sure that Hard Disk is checked.

Sometimes external devices are treated as removable devices. See if CDs and removable devices are checked in Finders Preferences for Sidebar and Desktop.

All items are checked in preferences.....
Icon has appeared in past...did nothing in Finder/Preferences to effect any change
Have been reading other threads about setting permissions of drive, and then icon dissappearing... how I did this I do not know?

Did you ever figure this one out?

I have seen two external Seagate drives (FW, 500GB) stop mounting after about one use on a mac. Neither of them would show up under windows XP or 2000 afterwards.

I reformatted one, and am wondering if I'll need to do the same thing to the other.
