favorite disk locations disappeared

OS 10.11.4. After some recent update, favorite disk locations remained when I open a folder from the finder itself (meaning: the favorite folders are listed in the left panel, at top), but disappeared from the window that opens when I try to open or save a file from Outlook, or Firefox, or POwerpoint. I tried adding in those windows (drag from the right panel to the left), but the change does not 'stick' meaning next time I need to open or save a file, the favorites are not listed in the left panel, only 'DEVICES', 'SHARED' and 'MEDIA', totally useless locations
