USB-C Multiport Adapter Update Install Fail

I've just brought home a new 2016 MacBook with a USB-C multipart adapter. I am attempting to successfully install the USB-C Multiport Adapter Update. After running the installer and hitting the "Restart" button on the final installer panel the menu bar at the top of the desktop disappears and the computer does not restart. I'm able to select and run programs from the dock, but the computer never restarts and the menu bar never comes back.

I've read and followed the online instructions for running the installer. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
