Q: Macbook 2012 will not connect to Airplay

I have tried absolutely everything to get my airplay to connect to my 2012 Macbook to airplay on my Apple TV. I restarted my mac and apple TV, updated both, disconnected and reconnected my wifi (both manually and on the apple TV), I checked my firewall and it is off. When I click on the display to connect it doesn't. Any ideas of what might work?

AppleTV 2, OS X El Capitan (10.11.4)

You might also check for any AirPlay security settings on your ATV. It may be rejecting the connection.
