I'm used to the previous Apple TV that had an optical audio out but with the new Apple TV 4, how can I get audio out if I'm hooking up straight HDMI to an external computer monitor? I tried an audio jack cable from my monitor but it doesn't seem to work...? Is something wrong with my monitor? Any other alternative methods to getting sound without having to use BT audio? Thanks.
What brand and model number monitor do you have?

Try setting the ATV audio output to Stereo.
Your monitor seems to support fixed audio out. If you hook them to powered speakers and adjust the audio output of the ATV to a simple stereo format it should work. Headphones are not supported.
Under settings surround sound mode set to stereo.
What receiver do you use with your speakers? Brand and model #?
I hooked up my Bose CineMate 2.1's up to the monitor via audio cable (like headphone jack on one end, left and right to Bose on the other end) and it still doesn't work. I tried changing the surround sound settings to Stereo, and still nothing. I know it's not the speakers or audio cable I'm using because it works when I plug in my iPhone...
Just checking, ATV audio output should be set to "Apple TV" to put the sound on the HDMI cable.
I looked at the manual for your monitor, and aside from the note defining the audio connection, there's no explanation of what it does. I'm afraid it might not be implemented. You might have to go with the splitter originally suggested by vazandrew.
Your powered speakers should work.
On the ATV go into settings under audio and video and change the Audio Mode from Auto to 16 bit.
