I can import pictures, adjust clip, crop, add music and play back in the left upper corner section of the screen. But the left upper part of the page is black and the individual slide does not open nor does the movie open there. I tried saving as an .m4v and play back. The screen is black and the music plays. How do I fix this update to get this to work and allow me to complete my project?

And I just did an iMovie update on 4/30/16 version 10.1.2
You need to upgrade your OS. iMovie 10.1.2 requires El Capitan version 10.11.2 or later. It will not run on your Mountain Lion 10.8.

I didn't know the App Store would even present you the option to install iMovie 10 if you're only running 10.8.5 or earlier.
Sorry, but my ignorance. I always do the Apple updates and my OS is updated. So the update for iMovie was allowed.
Ok so you have latest OS and iMovie. Perhaps you could post a screenshot of your problem so we can see exactly what it looks like. In the meantime try launching iMovie holding down the command and option keys. In the window that appears select delete preferences. Often when iMovie misbehaves the preferences are corrupt.
